PINEHURST, N.C. (WNCN) – Two teams have separated themselves from the rest of the field after day one of the 4A boy’s state golf championships in Pinehurst.
Pinecrest and Hough are tied at 296.
The eight-over par total is seven shots better than third-place Hough.
Broughton is in contention eight shots back while Green Hope is ten shots off the pace.
Hough’s Blake Wagoner shot the round of the day, a blistering five under par 67. He holds a four shot lead over Leesville Road’s Doc Redman who shot one under 71.
Pinecrest is looking to win their third state title in four years. Head coach Sandy Sackmann was happy with the Patriots round.
“We’re pretty proud of the way they played today although they seem to be disappointed feeling they left a lot of putts out there,” said Sackmann. “But I think our score is indicitive of the first day we’re not disappointed with that.”
Final round play is tomorrow at Pinehurst No. 8.
