MADD wants tighter laws on ignition interlocks

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants North Carolina to tighten laws on ignition interlocks.

The locks are placed in the cars of repeat DWI offenders and monitor blood alcohol levels before driving.

MADD wants lawmakers to place ignition interlocks into the cars of everyone charged with DWI in North Carolina. They say 10,000 locks have been installed as of 2014.

MADD says suspending the licenses of those convicted isn’t a punishment that works or rehabilitates.

“We know that this could be part of treatment; give them the opportunity to get back into their vehicle and drive where they need to go and attend meetings and attend treatment,” said Collen Sheehey- Chuch, President of MADD.

If passed, the bill would require the ignition interlocks to be bought and installed by the user.
