RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A worker for the city of Sanford won $250,000 in a scratch off game through the NC Lottery, officials say.

Guadalupe Rivera won while playing the new $250,000 Fortune scratch-off game.

Rivera, an equipment operator for the City of Sanford, said that he couldn’t believe his good luck when he scratched his ticket.

“I saw the zeros and had to call my brother to double check,” Rivera said. “I just didn’t believe it.”

Rivera claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After federal and state tax, he received $173,126.

Rivera bought the $5 ticket at the Value Mart on Carthage Street in Sanford.

$250,000 Fortune launched in April with five top prizes of $250,000. Three top prizes remain.
