SBI investigates Moore County Sheriff’s Office

CARTHAGE, N.C. (WNCN) – The State Bureau of Investigation confirmed Thursday it is investigating the Moore County Sheriff’s Office for allegations surrounding the sheriff’s son.

The SBI received a request from the Moore County District Attorney’s office March 15 to investigate Sheriff Neil Godfrey’s son and former deputy Brent Godfrey.

Brent Godfrey is accused of being intoxicated while on duty, the SBI said. The sheriff’s office knew of the situation and did not investigate it.

Brent Godfrey, 33, was hired in Dec. 2014 as a resource deputy. He became a full-time deputy just two months later.

He resigned in Feb. 29, 2016.

The SBI’s investigation is focused on a Feb. 29 incident involving Brent Godfrey.

Privacy laws prevent full disclosure of what occurred that night.

Neil Godfrey announced Wednesday he plans to retire at the end of May.
