GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – A student at Southside High School accidentally shot themselves in the school cafeteria Friday morning, putting several schools in the Greenville area on alert, according to school officials.

The Greenville County School District reports the student was shot at 8:40 a.m. with a gun that was in their possession.

The student was conscious and talking when they were taken to the hospital by EMS.

They do not believe the injuries are life threatening.

Police set up a perimeter, search all students and placed Southside High School and Thomas E. Kerns Elementary on lockdown.

Blythe Elementary and Grove Elementary are on partial lockdown.

Greenville County Sheriff’s deputies did a complete search of the school, including the rooftops.

All students are secure inside the building, according to deputies.

Although there is no longer danger or concern, school officials say will dismiss in a manner that allows full accountability. They want to make sure every child is accounted for.

The schools says Southside High will dismiss students now to parents/guardians with proper credentials.

Parents will need to enter through the school’s main entrance on Frontage Road.

The school will then dismiss student drivers.

Once that process is complete, bus riders will dismiss.

The school is asking that parents follow law enforcement direction and have patience.
