SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (WNCN) – A 28-year-old man had to be airlifted to the hospital after driving his Harley-Davidson motorcycle off the road and slamming into a guardrail in Southern Pines Sunday morning, the Aberdeen Times reported.
The single-vehicle crash happened in the 700 block of East Connecticut Avenue at approximately 2 a.m.
The injured man was transported from the scene to a landing zone that had been set up for emergency crews at the Memorial Park baseball field on Morganton Road so that he could be transported by helicopter to UNC Hospital’s trauma center, according to the Aberdeen Times.
Connecticut Avenue was blocked to traffic for an extended time period while the victim was assisted and the wreck investigated.
A second motorcycle operator that was driving with the victim witnessed the crash but was able to avoid wrecking and was not injured, the Aberdeen Times reported.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
