LOS ANGELES (WNCN) – The character of Jill Abbott is no stranger to fans of “The Young and the Restless” on CBS.
Abbott is the longest running character on “Y&R,” and has been portrayed by actress Jess Walton since June of 1987. Walton appeared in multiple television shows before joining “Y&R,” including “The Rockford Files,” “The Six Million Dollar Man,” Starsky & Hunt” and “Kojak.”
But she loves being on the close-knit cast of “The Young and the Restless” and portraying Abbott.
Walton told Sharon Tazewell of CBS North Carolina that her character is “very overbearing. She’s a bully.”
“She also has a very sweet side and a very loving side,” Walton said. “She’s very manipulative and she takes advantage of every situation. And, she wins however she can.”
Abbott once had a long feud with Katherine Chancellor. Chancellor was portrayed by Jeanne Cooper, who died in 2013.
Walton said playing opposite Cooper “was so much fun.”
“That is an element I really miss. I feel like a one-legged pirate without my buddy,” Walton said.
Walton also has acted with multiple Billy Abbott. Billy Abbott is now portrayed by Jason Thompson, who joined the cast in January.
“They’ve all been blond and blue eyed because they wanted him to look like an Abbott and this is the first dark one,” Walton said of Thompson. “So, I looked at him yesterday during one of our scenes and it was like looking into my own eyes. It was really weird.”
Walter said she adored all the men who played Billy Abbott and said that over time the cast feels like a family.
“The Young and the Restless” has been a ratings powerhouse. Asked why, Walton said, “It has incredible production values, it’s very, very rich. I think the acting is the best.”
And, she said, “I think the whole secret of soap operas is they become like family.”
And she hinted that CBS North Carolina viewers should expect to see more of Jill Abbott in coming episodes.
“It’s a wonderful show and it looks like I’m going to be coming on a little more in the next few months,” Walton said. “So please join us and watch — there are some great things coming up.”
CBS North Carolina anchor Sharon Tazewell visited Los Angeles in April to go behind the scenes at “The Young and the Restless.” Tazewell will even appear in an episode on May 30. Tazewell is going to appear as … well, wait and watch!
