(WNCN) – President Obama elaborated on his order involving transgender students and schools during a recent interview with BuzzFeed News.
His order last week allows transgender students at public schools to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify.
President Obama said he won’t comment on the lawsuits going back and forth between North Carolina and the Justice Department, but on the education order, he said it was in response to schools asking for guidance.
“We said it is our view that you should try to treat these kids with dignity, the president said. “There’s school districts that’ve been wrestling with this problem and have, we think, done a good job in accommodating them in a way that is good for everybody.”
President Obama said students who are the minority, have a different sexual orientation, or are transgender are vulnerable and potentially subject to a lot of bullying.
He said it’s society’s obligation to make sure all kids are treated fairly.
