LOS ANGELES – A Raleigh teacher and her fiancée got a major surprise from Ellen DeGeneres after their efforts to save their sick dog.
Jennifer Marion, who teaches the second grade at Root Elementary in Raleigh, and Jim Raschella appeared on “Ellen” Tuesday on CBS North Carolina. The show was taped Monday in Los Angeles.
Marion and Rashcella are huge animal lovers who rescue and foster dog. Last year, Marion rescued a dog named Pearl who later struggled with a pancreatic illness. Pearl was healed by N.C. State veterinarians but the cost was nearly $16,000.
“We decided as long as she was not in pain we would continue to fight,” Raschella told DeGeneres.
“Our dogs are our babies,” Marion said. “It was never a big decision.”
Five of Marion’s students rallied to help with a lemonade stand – and that got the attention of DeGeneres in Los Angeles.
“This is adorable,” DeGeneres said. “So they put up a lemonade stand and raised $120.
“That’s a lot of lemonade. … So good for them!”
And DeGeneres had a huge surprise for Marion and Raschella – a new lemonade stand, and a gift of $10,000.
“Oh my god!” Marion shreaked when DeGeneres unveiled the money.
