First North Carolina misses out on the ACC Baseball Tournament on the final day of the regular season and now Duke is out of the tournament before it can reach Pool Play.
Wake Forest, despite being outhit 13-5, scored two in the first inning against Duke and never trailed as the Deacons beat the Blue Devils 4-3 in the first round of the ACC Baseball Tournament in Durham at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Wake’s Stuart Fairchild hit a two-run homer over the blue monster in left field in the first inning to put the Deacs up 2-0.
Duke’s Evan Dougherty singled in a run in the second inning to draw the Devils to 2-1 but Wake picked up a run in the third on a sacrifice fly to get the lead back up to two runs at 3-1.
Gaven Sheets singled in Fairchild in the sixth to give the Deacons a 4-1 cushion and they would need it.
Jack Lobosky doubled in a run in the seventh for Duke and Justin Bellinger singled in another to draw the Devils to 4-3.
But that’s all the Blue Devils could muster. Wake held off the Devils in the ninth as Duke had runners on first and third when reliever Will Craig struck out pinch-hitter Michael Smiciklas to end it.
Parker Dunshee (9-4) struck out 10 and allowed three runs in 6 2-3 innings.
Wake Forest now advances to Pool Play to take on the No. 2 seeded Louisville team at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Duke, now 33-22, must wait for an NCAA Tournament bid.
