RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A minivan driver who crashed into her own apartment Monday night is now facing charges of misdemeanor child abuse after young kids were left alone before the crash, Raleigh police say.
The crash happened around 10:20 p.m. Monday at 1147 Clanton Street, Raleigh Police said.
The wreck happened when a 28-year-old woman was backing a van out of a parking space and hit the gas instead of the brake, police said in a report.
The van hit a curb, a no-parking sign and then went down a hill — smashing into the living room of the apartment, police said.
Four children — a 5-year-old female, a 4-year-old female, a 3-year-old male and an 8-month-old male — were in the apartment and were hit by debris during the crash, police said.
The four were taken to WakeMed for evaluation.
Now, the van’s driver, Jaleesa S. Long, is facing misdemeanor child abuse after leaving the four children unattended when she left her residence, police added.
Long was also cited for reckless driving and failing to comply with registration.
EDITOR’S NOTE: On Monday night, police initially said the van’s driver was a man.
