TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) – An Alexander County woman has been charged with murder in the death of her newborn child.
On Tuesday morning, the 4-day-old baby was found unresponsive in a home in the Wittenburg Community. The newborn was pronounced dead on scene by MEDIC, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
Aishia Marie Pacheco, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder in the child’s death.
Sheriff Chris Bowman held back tears Wednesday morning as he told reporters the mom admitted to suffocating her child because the baby would not stop crying.
She told WBTV “I’m sorry” while walking into the courthouse.
The baby has been taken to to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for an autopsy. Pacheco is being held under a $1 million bond.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for June 6 in Alexander County.
