Richmond County, NC (WBTV) – A licensed medical doctor in Richmond County is charged with sexual battery and prescribing medication to patients without a medical reason.

The North Carolina SBI says 70-year-old Wendell Dalton Wells authorized prescriptions for controlled substances, Alprazolam and Hydrocodone, without a legitimate medical purpose and without examining patients.

Wells is also charged with three counts of sexual battery. The charges stem from the improper touching of a patient, the SBI says. The three-month long undercover investigation began after allegations were confirmed, the SBI says.

Wells practiced at the First Choice Medical Chiropractic in Rockingham.

Officials executed search warrants at two locations where Wells saw patients, at the Rockingham facility and Company Health/Moore care in Hoffman.

Wells surrendered his North Carolina medical license and his DEA registration, the SBI says.

In addition to the sexual battery charges, Wells is charged with sale/delivery of a schedule II controlled substance, sale/delivery of a schedule IV controlled substance, two counts of prescribing a controlled substance without a legitimate medical purpose, and one count of failure to keep medical records.

“These charges represent felonies that will be prosecuted by the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office,” the SBI says.

He was placed in the Richmond County Jail and given a $25,000 secured bond.
