RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Raleigh man was arrested and charged with DWI Thursday morning after driving the wrong way for miles on Interstate 440, authorities said.

According to officials, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol communications center received a number of phone calls from concerned drivers about a vehicle heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-440.

A trooper got on the beltline at Six Forks Road and got behind the vehicle. The driver, identified as Clifton Keith Jeffries, 56, refused to stop but did turn his vehicle around.

Raleigh Police said that Jeffries exited from I-440 at Lake Boone Trail. Jeffries was then pulled over and arrested by a trooper at 1:52 a.m.

Authorities said Jeffries vehicle accidentally bumped the trooper’s car, but it didn’t appear it was done intentionally.

Jeffries is being held at the Wake County Detention Center under a $2,000 secured bond.
