CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Fifteen people were injured after a school bus went down an embankment and hit a house in southeast Charlotte Tuesday morning.
The Charlotte Fire Department says it happened around 9 a.m. on Briardale Drive at Brook Canyon Drove, just off of W T Harris Boulevard.
Officials say the bus went off the road and hit a parked car before continuing down the hill, hitting a house. The driver was briefly trapped.
Medic says 15 people went to area hospitals with minor injuries. According to officials, eight students were taken to Carolinas Medical Center and six students were taken to Novant Medical. Crews say the students only suffered minor injuries.
Officials say the bus driver was briefly trapped.
One person was inside the house and was reportedly not injured in the crash. Officials are checking the structural integrity of the house and say it appears there is only damage to the deck.
The homeowner, Joe Whitehead, says he heard children screaming after the bus crashed into his deck. One neighbor told WBTV she saw children with broken bones and cuts.
Crews are working to remove the bus from the home.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg School officials, parents of the students onboard are being notified. Counselors will be sent tot he school if they are needed.
