MIAMI (WNCN) – The 2016 hurricane season has arrived and now is the time to get you and your family ready for any potential tropical system that could head our way.

Chief Meteorologist Wes Hohenstein recently visited the National Hurricane Center in Miami for a behind-the-scenes tour of how they track hurricanes and where they make critical decisions.

Guiding CBS North Carolina on the tour was one of the top specialists at the National Hurricane Center, but he was born and raised in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Jamie Rhome is the Storm Surge Specialist and Team Lead at the hurricane headquarters in South Florida.  He graduated from N.C. State University in the 1990s and said if it wasn’t for a Hurricane named Fran in 1996, he might be studying winter weather and not hurricanes.
