Ironman event in Raleigh to close roads and block parking on Sunday

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Thousands of athletes will take to the water and the roads to compete in the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Raleigh on Saturday and Sunday.

The event includes bicycling and running, which means some roads will be closed and some parking areas will be closed.

Some roads will also be closed during set up for the various events.

Road Closures

Section 1 – The following roads will be closed from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday to facilitate event setup and breakdown:

Fayetteville Street from Lenoir Street to Davie Street

Section 3 – The following roads will be closed from 4 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday to facilitate the transition location:

Lenoir Street between Wilmington Street and Blount Street

Section 4 – The following roads will be closed from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday to facilitate aid stations along course:

Hillsborough Street between Dawson Street and Harrington Street
Hillsborough Street between Forest Road and Woodburn Road
Hillsborough Street between Bagwell Avenue and Dixie Trail
Davie Street between Fayetteville Street and Wilmington Street

Section 5 – The biking route will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. (see map)

Section 6 – The running roads will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. (see map)

NOTE: All cross streets one block in each direction will be detoured along the routes

Turn-By-Turns

Biking Route

The following roads will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday to facilitate the biking portion of the event:

Enter City Limits at Lake Wheeler Road and Tryon Road
Continue north on Lake Wheeler Road (west lane of Lake Wheeler between I-40 and Centennial Pkwy will remain open)
Left onto S. Saunders St.
Right onto W. South St.
Left onto Wilmington St.
Enter into transition lot on Wilmington St. between Lenoir St. and Cabarrus St. to finish

Running Route

The following roads will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday to facilitate the running portion of the event:

Start at the transition lot on Wilmington St. between Lenoir St. and Cabarrus St.
Left onto S. Wilmington St. (Wilmington east lane will remain open)
Left onto E. Edenton St. (Edenton north lane will remain open)
Left onto S. Salisbury St. (Salisbury west lane will remain open until Hillsborough)
Right onto Hillsborough St. (Hillsborough north lane will remain open until McDowell)
Turn around on Hillsborough St. at Gorman St.
Continue east along Hillsborough St.
Right onto S. Salisbury St.
Left onto W. Morgan St. (traffic may turn from Morgan right onto Salisbury southbound)
Right onto Fayetteville St.
Left onto Davie St.
Left onto S. Wilmington St.
Repeat the same loop to Gorman St. and back to Fayetteville and Davie St.
Continue south on Fayetteville St. past Davie St.
Finish at City Plaza

Parking

The following streets will be posted “No Parking” during the designated times:

Fayetteville Street between Lenoir Street and Davie Street from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday until 11:59 p.m.
Fayetteville Street between Davie Street and Morgan Street from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.
The entire biking route and the entire running route will be posted “No Parking” from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m. as well as any cross streets within the downtown and southwest vicinity
Davie Street between Salisbury Street and Wilmington Street
Martin Street between Salisbury Street and Wilmington Street
Hargett Street between Salisbury Street and Wilmington Street
