‘The Hotdog Princess’ storming the Internet is from Wake County

APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — A little girl in a hotdog costume is becoming a champion on the Internet for individuality.

And it turns out, the girl dubbed “The Hotdog Princess” is from central North Carolina. Her hashtag ruled Twitter for days and dominated headlines in publications near and far.

The girl underneath the hotdog is Ainsley Turner, a 6-year-old girl from Apex who takes dance lessons at the Holly Springs Dance Studio. She started making waves last month, when she wore her favorite costume to class on “Princess Day.”

“I love that she felt confident enough to come to the studio dressed in something that she felt was appropriate and would be fun,” said Marilyn Chappell, owner of Holly Springs Dance Studio.

“I went in the studio and saw she was dressed in her hotdog suit and I was just like, ‘Oh you’re the cutest hotdog I’ve ever seen!’” said Grayson LaMontagne, Ainsley’s dance teacher.

LaMontagne admits the other dancers giggled at Ainsley’s frank apparel at first. But, the little trend-setter pulled off the look so well, they ate it up.

And, Ainsley was sure to make it known she wasn’t against princesses by wearing a dress along with her hotdog.

“She had it on underneath in case she got hot in her hotdog. But she literally took the hotdog off for ten minutes to cool down in the middle of class and then it went right back on,” said LaMontagne.

The pictures of Ainsley in class have gone viral. Stories about her confidence are circling the globe, popping up in fashion magazines and even inspiring a new Lego princess.

Her parents didn’t want to comment on the story Tuesday, but others we spoke to are happy to see such an inspiring little girl.

“Good for her that she has the chutzpa to go out there and be different,” said Barbara Bowen.

“I like the idea that a little girl doesn’t feel like she has to be all frilly like every other little girl,” said Marilyn Fletcher.

“What has resonated with so many people is this message of being yourself and being confident enough to be different. And I think we all needed for someone to kind of give us a visual, and it’s just ironic that it’s a small child in a hotdog costume,” said Chappell.
