CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A trailer carrying bees was involved in an accident on Interstate-85 Tuesday, blocking three lanes of traffic and causing major delays.
The crash happened just after 3 p.m. on northbound I-85 on the Catawba River bridge, which is just north of Exit 27. Officials confirmed one of the vehicles involved was loaded with honey bees and yellow jackets.
North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said the three lanes were expected to be closed for several hours, and urged drivers to seek alternate routes.
From WBTV’s Sky 3, it appeared that two tractor trailers and a smaller vehicle pulling a trailer collided with one another. One of the tractor trailers had heavy front-end damage.
Medic said one person suffered minor injuries in the crash, and is expected to be OK. Investigators have not said how the crash may have happened.
Officials said they were calling in additional crews and a beekeeper to deal with the bees.
