Burch in court Thursday.

SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) – The man accused of shooting his estranged wife in the parking lot of the Lee County Courthouse Wednesday made another appearance in court Thursday – this time facing assault and kidnapping charges.

The judge set Steven Douglas Burch’s bond at $750,000 during his first court appearance Thursday. Burch was also given a court-appointed attorney.

Burch, 35, is facing several charges including assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree kidnapping.

Burch told the judge that he and his estranged wife were at the courthouse Wednesday to discuss a domestic protective order.

The district attorney’s office says the two got into an argument in the parking lot and Burch shot his wife in the back.

Police say Burch ran away but was captured a short time later.

The district attorney told the judge that Burch’s wife was taken to Central Carolina Hospital and then airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She is expected to survive.

Burch is expected to appear in court again on June 28.
