GREEN SWAMP, N.C. (WECT) – A Florida man is dead following a plane crash in Brunswick County Friday morning.

According to Sgt. Eric Harris with the State Highway Patrol, David Simard, 57, took off in a single-engine fertilizer aircraft from the Bear Pen landing strip in Green Swamp around 8:50 a.m. Simard had roughly 45 minutes of fuel when he departed.

When Simard hadn’t returned, crews began a search for his plane. Authorities used his cell phone signal, as well as airplanes and helicopters, to try and track down Simard.

The plane’s wreckage was eventually located in a wooded area off Town Creek Road in Winnabow.

Officials said Simard was a contractor for the landowner in that area.

The State Highway Patrol is heading up the investigation, but representatives from the US Forest Service, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management and Columbus County Emergency Management are also on scene.
