ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – A man considered armed and dangerous is on the loose after a young mom was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning, police said.
Officers were was dispatched to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in reference to a person who had been dropped off by a friend, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to police.
Upon arrival, officers say they found 25-year-old Maya Christine Alexander being treated by hospital staff. Investigators say Alexander suffered a gunshot to the lower back.
Doctors pronounced Alexander dead shortly after her arrival. Alexander was the mother of a young boy, according to posts on Facebook.
Alexander was a front seat passenger in a red 2013 Chevrolet Sonic driven by Lashonda Carter, according to police. Carter told police the vehicle was occupied by a back seat passenger, Darren Duane Jernigan, who took off after shooting Alexander.
The investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling near the intersection of Cardwell Street and Walkers Avenue.
Police are actively looking for Darren Duane Jernigan, nicknamed “DAP”, who is a 34-year-old black male, approximately 6’, 310 pounds. Police have secured a warrant on Jernigan for second-degree murder.
Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
