Johnston County officer, resident bitten by rabid fox

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) – An animal control officer and a Smithfield resident are receiving rabies treatment after they were bitten by a fox Tuesday.

A Johnston County Animal Control officer attempted to capture a fox in the area of Market and Hill streets in Smithfield.

The officer was bitten and the fox escaped. A resident was bitten short time later in the same area.

The fox was then caught and put down.

In each incident, officials believe skin was not broken, but both received treatment as a precautionary measure.

The fox tested positive for rabies.
