NC scammer claims he needs to test water to enter homes

LILLINGTON, N.C. (WNCN) – Harnett County officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for a scam.

Officials said Thursday that several residents have said a man claiming to be from the water department out of Raleigh has left a valve in their mailbox along with a message that he will come by later to test their water.

The residents said he returned and flashed a badge with a serial number. When he came in to test their water, he asked personal questions, such as whether the residents live alone or have children.

Harnett officials are urging people to call police if someone matching this description comes to their residence. Harnett County Public Utilities employees will never enter residents’ homes, the county said. When testing water, they use the meter or an outdoor spigot.

If you have any questions, contact Harnett County Public Utilities at (910) 893-7575.
