FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – A 28-year-old Fayetteville man, who was arrested on felony child abuse charges in May, fractured his infant son’s skull and assaulted his 4-year-old stepdaughter several times, court documents reveal.
Sean Underhill, a U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, faces charges of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, felony conspiracy and felony common law obstruction of justice.
His wife, Jazmin Marie Garcia, 28, faces the same charges for assault on the infant.
The infant, hospitalized at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, was initially on a ventilator to stay alive but that condition has improved.
The doctor who first treated the infant, 9 months old at the time, told police that, in addition to a fractured skull, he also suffered a fractured jaw, a spinal fracture and internal bleeding from the brain.
The 4-year-old’s injuries were non-life-threatening.
She told police that Underhill hit her in the head and held her upside down until “red stuff” came out of her nose. She also said she had been choked a number of times.
Underhill is set to appear in court on June 22 for the child abuse charge and July 28 for the other felony charges while Garcia’s appearance is set for July 26.
