WENDELL, N.C. (WNCN) – Two men were killed after their SUV flipped and they were partially ejected in a field in Wendell Saturday morning, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed to CBS North Carolina.
Authorities aren’t sure when the wreck at Major Slade Road and Mial Plantation Road happened, but they arrived on scene around 6:30 a.m. to find a 2007 Ford Explorer flipped on its side with two men dead inside.
The deceased have been identified as Sean Desmone McKoy, 29, and Randy Kent Norris Jr., 27, both of Knightdale. McKoy was driving and Norris was the passenger, authorities said.
A trooper on scene said the wreck may have happened around 3 or 4 a.m.
By Saturday evening, there were hundreds of comments on social media mourning the loss of McKoy and Norris, who both appeared to be fathers based on posts on social media.
“Man I can’t even believe this right now,” wrote Justin Terrill Jordan on Facebook.
“My prayers go out to both families and everyone else affected. R.I.P Sean McKoy and Randy Norris Jr. Love y’all dudes. I’m so sorry for this to happen to anyone. Life is so short and unforeseen dangers are so real,” Jordan added.
McKoy was an assistant manager at Walmart and leaves behind a young daughter, according to his Facebook profile.
Norris, who had two young children, was a player for the Raleigh Raptors, a semi-pro football team in Raleigh, posts on social media indicate.
“Randy Norris Jr. I’m in shock. I just talked to you 2 days ago. You had so much more left to do in this world and were taken too soon. My heart breaks for your family and kids. Sean McKoy you were also taken to soon. Great memories I will always hold onto with these two. My prayers and thoughts go out to the families,” wrote Amy Prevatte on Facebook.
The Raptors have now dedicated their upcoming season to Norris, who was #55 on the team, according to the team’s Facebook page.
“This season for you Randy #55,” the team said in a post with a photo of Norris with the team.
Authorities believe that alcohol and speed were factors in the crash and the driver and passenger were not wearing seat belts.
The crash is under investigation.
