Amanda Strous, 27, of Charlotte died Saturday evening after a fire that was set in her apartment in the Steele Creek area, officials say.

The incident was first reported around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 12100 block of Toscana Way.

Officials said that the fire was set while Strous was still inside the apartment. Firefighters managed to pull Strous out of the burning apartment.

She was rushed to CMC-Steele Creek, but she later died.

WBTV reported that Strous was getting married in less than 2 months and the gift registry website The Knot listed her wedding date as July 30.

Neighbors who live in the same building were also inside their units at the time of the fire.

With a possible suspect still on the run, they didn’t want to talk on camera to WBTV, but they said they can’t believe a murder investigation is going on in their otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Meanwhile, a small memorial of flowers was started near Strous’ apartment and many people wrote condolences on social media.

“Thoughts and prayers go out to Amanda Strous’ family and Cory Michael at this time. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Amanda was such and amazing person,” wrote Sara Brensinger on Facebook.

Strous was from York, Pa. and was a college student counselor at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, according to her Facebook profile.

“Speechless… To one of the most awesome people I know. A co-worker who always encouraged others. Her beauty matched her personality, truly one of a kind,” wrote  Craig Anthony Moses Goines on Facebook.

“My prayers go out to her family and friends. To all those who share a heavy heart at the news of her loss. Rest in peace my friend,” Goines added.

Strous was a graduate of Shippensburg University, where she was a psychology major, her Facebook profile said.  She also obtained a Master’s Degree in counseling in clinical mental health from Shippensburg University, according to her LinkedIn profile.

While at Shippensburg she played field hockey, competing in the NCAA Championships, posts on social media indicate.  She was also an assistant coach for the university’s field hockey team after graduating.
