LILLINGTON, N.C. (WNCN) — The Harnett County Board of Commissioners paid tribute to a fallen soldier on Monday evening.

Laurin Gates, 20, was killed during a training exercise earlier this month at Fort Hood.

She grew up in Dunn and she graduated from Triton High School.

Veterans joined with the board to issue a proclamation. Gates’ family was there to receive it.

During the touching ceremony, the board remembered Gates as a beloved member of the community, whose dream it was to serve her country.

Her mother echoed those sentiments.

“She loved the Army. Oh my God, she was only in for a few months, but she said ‘Mother I have finally found the thing that I love’,” said Marlene Strongs, Gates’ mother

The Veterans Association helped organize the tribute. Gates was one of nine soldiers killed in that accident.
