LAWNDALE, N.C. (WBTV) – One person was killed and a deputy injured in an officer-involved shooting in Cleveland County Tuesday.
The incident happened on East Stage Coach Trail near Lawndale. Officials said Deputy Scott Trammel was called to the home to assist EMS with a mental illness call.
When Deputy Trammel got to the scene, he was assaulted and discharged his weapon, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. Trammel then called for backup.
Trammel was taken to an area hospital with injuries to his head and arm. He was released from the hospital Tuesday evening, and was placed on paid leave. He has been with the sheriff’s office for five years.
The person killed, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said he was in his 20s, but did not give further details.
Multiple law enforcement vehicles could be seen in an area around a home. Crime scene tape was blocking the driveway and going into a small wooded area.
The SBI is investigating the incident.
