Armed man robs NC store, grabs pack of Newports from victim who was forced on ground

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect from an armed robbery early Saturday.

The incident happened around 3:23 a.m. Saturday at the Kangaroo Store at 2990 Gillespie Street in Fayetteville, Cumberland County deputies said.

The clerk of the store called 911 and reported the store had robbed.

The suspect, described as a tall white male with a reddish colored, long scruffy beard, and was armed with a rifle.

The suspect told a customer to “get on the ground.” The suspect then took money from the store’s register and a pack of Newport 100s from a customer on the ground.

The unknown suspect left the store and got into a greenish/blue, possible two door Chevrolet Cobalt, which was missing the driver’s side hub caps, and sped off.

Detectives saw the vehicle traveling southbound on Gillespie Street and gave chase. The detectives lost sight of the vehicle in the area of Gillespie Street at the intersection of Angle Drive.
