SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (WNCN) — An elderly man died after drowning in a pond in Moore County on Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Emergency responders were called to a pond off Gossman Drive in Southern Pines Saturday afternoon, according to the Aberdeen Times.
The incident happened at a pond across from 105 Gossman Drive just after 1 p.m.
William Grine, 83, died after somehow ending up in the pond, officials said.
A statement was released by St. Joseph of the Pines:
Pete Grine, a retired urologist and resident of The Coventry, died Saturday of an apparent accidental drowning in the pond behind the Belle Meade clubhouse.
Dr. Grine had just finished having lunch with a fellow Coventry resident at the clubhouse, and they were walking back to The Coventry when the accident occurred about 1 p.m.
St. Joseph of the Pines colleagues responded and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate Dr. Grine.
The Southern Pines Police Department and EMS personnel arrived shortly thereafter.
“This appears to be an unfortunate accident,” said Steven Kastner, president and CEO for St. Joseph of the Pines. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Grine family.”
Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Southern Pines Police Department and the NC State Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the incident.
