RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The grills were sizzling in downtown Raleigh on Wednesday as chefs from five restaurants competed to see whose grilled cheese would rein supreme.
The melted cheese and delicious butter was all a part of the Raleigh Downtown Farmer’s Market’s fifth annual Grilled Cheese Cook Off.
It was a fierce afternoon of competition as Jimmy V’s Osteria + Bar, Rye Bar & Southern Kitchen, Buku Raleigh, Linus & Pepper’s and P.G. Werth’s all believed that their cheesy creation would be crowned victorious.
Hundreds of visitors lined up to get their hands on a sample and voted on their favorite.
Even CBS North Carolina Storm Team Meteorologist Kristin Ketchell got in on the action.
“This is fantastic. This is exactly what we want. I mean, the whole point of this competition is to get people excited about downtown Raleigh restaurants and all five of the restaurants participating are chefs from restaurants in our immediate downtown area,” said Danny Vivenzio with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance.
In the end, Buku Raleigh was given the coveted cheese crown, edging out two-time champion Jimmy V’s.
