JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Jon James Thomas, a former Onslow County County deputy, was sentenced to over six years of prison for receiving child pornography.

The court ordered Thomas, 45, to register as a sex offender, as well as a lifetime of supervised release following his prison time.

He was first named in an indictment filed in October of 2015. Thomas pleaded guilty in January to one count of receipt of child pornography.

At the time of his arrest, he was a patrol duty and a school resource officer.

Thomas indicated that a “couple of hundred” files, both images and videos, were stored on his computer, Federal officials said in a press release Wednesday.

“Forensic examination of the defendant’s computer revealed at least 600 images and 1,040 videos which depicted child pornography. Furthermore, forensics recovered 112 deleted images from the defendant’s computer,” the press release said.

In January, Thomas admitted to downloading child porn starting in 2014. Thomas was arrested by SBI agents in October of last year.

According to Sheriff Hans Miller, Thomas worked with the sheriff’s office for about seven years, most recently as a patrol deputy and previously spending time as a school resource officer.

Agents say the crimes occurred from November 2014 through May 2015.
