NC teacher held under $1 million bond for drug charges

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A Shallotte Middle School teacher is in the Brunswick County jail under a $1 million bond on drug charges.

Investigators with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kelly Kiggins Hansen, 49, for trafficking in opium or heroin.

According to Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki, Hansen was placed on administrative leave with pay effective Thursday, June 30, and will remain so pending the outcome of an investigation into her charges.

According to warrants, investigators say Hansen possessed more than four grams of opium. The warrants also state Hansen had 4.3 grams of dihydrocodeine with intent to sell.

Hansen’s court date is set for Thursday June 30.

Hansen was hired by Brunswick County Schools on Aug. 9, 2004. She is employed as a language arts teacher.
