ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) – One person nearly drowned at Atlantic Beach late Saturday afternoon, while several swimmers were rescued from rip currents on Sunday.
A 30-year-old man was rescued by a beach-goer at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday after he was in distress.
The incident happened just minutes after lifeguards went off duty.
The man was transported to Carteret Health Care and is reportedly on a ventilator as of Sunday.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, several people were rescued from strong rip currents in Atlantic Beach.
Atlantic Beach Fire Captain John Stephenson tells WNCT a call came in around 2:45 p.m. Sunday for several people in distress in the water.
Crews arrived on scene and assisted lifeguards in rescuing six people from what they say were strong rip currents.
The people rescued were of various ages.
Atlantic Beach Fire Department is reminding people to stay safe in the water.
