RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – An elderly Raleigh man who went missing late Saturday afternoon was found dead not far from his home Sunday morning, John Jones with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies, Raleigh police and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol had been searching for Jerry Roberts, 77, who had gone missing from his home on Trailing Cedars Drive. Authorities looked for him Saturday evening and into the night. Deputies were out for several hours and a highway patrol helicopter had been called in to assist in the search.
Roberts was found in the woods in his subdivision about 1/4 to 1/2-mile from his home, Jones said.
Roberts was known to walk around the area, usually with the assistance of a cane or walker.
Authorities believed they had spotted Roberts near 11700 New Leesville Road Saturday night.
The City-County Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death and no determination has been made as to the cause.
An autopsy will be performed and that will determine whether or not foul play was involved in Roberts’ death, authorities said.
