NC policeman and teen girl hit by lightning at Topsail Beach

TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WECT) — Two people were struck by lightning on the south end of Topsail Beach Sunday evening.

According to the Topsail Beach Police Chief Sam Gervase, the incident happened around 5 p.m. near Serenity Point.

Gervase said a teenage girl was struck by lighting first.

Topsail Beach Police Sergeant. Zach Cooke was responding to the scene and helped to get the girl to EMS, but when he was leaving the beach he was also struck by lighting.

The teen was rushed to the nearest hospital. She is being transported to UNC-Chapel Hill for further treatment.

According to Chief Gervase, she was suffering from burns on her ears.

Sgt. Cooke’s injuries do not appear to be as serious, but he was still taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Sgt. Cooke has been with the Topsail Beach Police Department for 10 years.
