FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – A Cumberland County teen had sexting-related charges against him dismissed Thursday after completing probation, officials said.
In 2015, Cormega Copening was charged with five felony counts of sexual exploitation after nude photos were found on his cell phone. Copening was 16 at the time but charged an adult.
During an investigation in 2014, deputies say they found nude pictures in Copening’s cellphone and that he and his girlfriend were apparently sexting.
Copening pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges and was under one-year probation.
As part of his plea deal, Copening had his charges dropped after completing his probation.
Copening could not use a cellphone while on probation.
His girlfriend accepted the same plea deal.
Copening was the quarterback for the Jack Britt High School Buccaneers when he was charged. He was suspended from the team but eventually was allowed back.
Authorities said he was a student at Douglas Byrd High School at the time of the offenses.
