CEDAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. (WSPA/WNCN) – One person drowned at Hooker Falls around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Endi Alvarez, 18, of Henderson, was swimming with friends when he drowned in the DuPont State Forest.
Chief Deputy Eddie Gunter said someone on the bank saw Alvarez go down and was able to swim in and rescue him.
Gunter says Alvarez was still alive when EMS arrived but died on the way to the hospital.
They still aren’t sure what caused him to go under.
Little River drops about 12-feet at Hooker Falls before flowing into Cascade Lake.
The section of Cascade Lake below Hooker Falls is popular for swimming, though the Forest Service does not encourage swimming at the area or provide any supervision, according to the website Friends of DuPont State Forest.
Hooker Falls is the fourth waterfall on Little River starting with Bridal Veil Falls, then High Falls and then Triple Falls.
