SHALLOTTE, N.C. (WECT) – A Shallotte Middle School teacher was released from the Brunswick County Detention Center and resigned from Brunswick County Schools on Wednesday.
Investigators with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kelly Kiggins Hansen, 49, at her Shallotte residence on June 29. She was charged with trafficking in opium or heroin and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a schedule II controlled substance.
She was booked in the Brunswick County Detention Center under $100,000 bond.
According to arrest warrants, investigators said Hansen possessed more than 4 grams of opium. The warrants also state Hansen had 4.3 grams of dihydrocodeine with intent to sell.
Officials said Hansen’s arrest was part of a month-long investigation. No one else has been charged.
Jessica Swencki, spokeswoman for Brunswick County Schools, said Hansen’s resignation from Brunswick County Schools was approved by the board Tuesday night and was effective Wednesday and is no longer a Brunswick County Schools employee.
Hansen was hired by Brunswick County Schools on Aug. 9, 2004.
