FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Fayetteville police detectives are investigating a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on July 10 and was reported the next day, police said.
According to authorities, a woman reported that she was raped around 4 a.m. on July 10 after an unknown man got into the passenger’s seat of her vehicle and pointed a gun at her and told her to drive to a dirt road.
The man got into the woman’s car in the area of Ramsey Street near Rosehill Road. She was then forced to drive to an unknown location where she was then raped, police said. The suspect then got out of the car and fled on foot.
The suspect was described as being 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-3, with a thin build, pale complexion, dark brown hair and a goatee. The suspect had a strong southern accent and was wearing a black hat and black gloves. The suspect also had a tattoo on his left arm, which may have included the picture of a sword or cross.
The victim also told police that the man had a strong odor of marijuana on him.
“We’ve had 50 rape reports filed this year, which is about 40 percent higher than last year this time, but we’re actually good with that number and I’ll tell you why. Starting in June of last year, we started making more arrests in both current and cold cases. We started publicizing those arrests more than we did in the past,” said Lt. John Somerindyke.
Anyone with information regarding the sexual assault or the identity of the suspect is asked to contact Detective P. Matrafailo with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 322-4101 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
