NC deputies recapture escaped inmate after car crash

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities have recaptured an escaped inmate in Wilmington following a pursuit that resulted in a car crash.

New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jerry Brewer tells news organizations that officials arrested 34-year-old Steven Singleton Monday night.

Brewer says a deputy had spotted Singleton in Wilmington Monday and a chased after him. Following a pursuit, Singleton crashed his car into another vehicle and took off on foot.

He was eventually caught and taken into custody. Officials say he was driving a stolen vehicle and was injured in the crash.

Singleton escaped the New Hanover Correctional Center last Wednesday.

He will face charges including felony escape from prison. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
