CLAYTON, N.C. (WNCN) – On the hottest day of the year so far a Johnston County church is without two of its AC units.
Authorities are looking for the thief or thieves who stole them from the church on N.C. Highway 42 in Clayton.
“It’s hard for me to believe that anybody would steal anything but especially from a church,” said pastor Doug Abel.
And yet that’s precisely what Abel of the Mt. Pleasant Advent Christian Church said happened.
He said parishioners working to set up the bible study noticed that two AC units had gone missing.
“Where these were taken from is our Sunday school class. And so they didn’t take anything from the fellowship hall,” Abel said.
Abel said it’ll probably cost about $10,000 to replace the units.
Authorities said the thieves were likely after the cooper inside the units.
Abel said they stole the two older units – the ones with more cooper and left the newer one behind.
The pastor said it is clear the thieves knew what they were doing.
“I would forgive them for it and I hope they’ll ask forgiveness from the Lord for this,” Abel said. “They’re going to have to answer for this one day.”
A GoFundMe has been established to help replace the units.
