DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – An attempted robbery suspect was shot after he and a woman lured a Durham resident out of his home early Friday.
Around 4:30 a.m., a resident of Cole Mill Road said he was awakened by someone was honking a car horn in his driveway and flashing the vehicle’s headlights.
The resident told police he retrieved his gun and went outside.
A woman inside the vehicle said she needed to use his phone because she had a fight with a relative, Durham police said.
At that point, a male suspect, later identified as Jerel Antonio Thompson, came around the corner of the house and exchanged gunfire with the resident.
The resident was not injured in the incident.
Around 5 a.m., Thompson arrived at Duke Regional Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.
Thompson’s injuries do not appear to be life threatening, police said.
Thompson was charged with charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
