$1.5 million bond for NC man charged in deadly heroin overdose

SNEADS FERRY, N.C. (WNCN) – Onslow County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a man for second degree murder in an overdose death.

Jarred Eddington, 21, was charged in connection to the drug overdose death of 21-year-old Jason Sapp.

Sapp died in April from asphyxiation, after allegedly overdosing on heroin.

Eddington is at the Onslow County Detention Center under a $1.5 million bond.

Eddington and Sapp were friends on Facebook.

Jason Westberry “Wes” Sapp IV died on April 7, according to his obituary. Sapp was a 2012 graduate of Dixon High School. He worked at Rick’s Restaurant and Sports Bar, his obituary said.

Sheriff Hans Miller told WNCT the drug abuse in Sneads Ferry has significantly increased, and said everyone must get involved to combat the war on drugs.

CBS North Carolina Investigates pulled data from 2010 to 2014 and found the number of people dying just from heroin use has jumped up 584 percent.

In 2014, more than 250 people died of a heroin overdose in North Carolina, according to North Carolina Public Health.

Eddington is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.
