Explosion blows 5 off boat on SC lake

LAKE HARTWELL, S.C. (WSPA) – Four adults and one child were blown off a boat by an explosion Sunday on Lake Hartwell, officials said.

A boat exploded and caught fire on the around 2:45 p.m. in the Long Point area off of Old Highway 29, according to Corporal Craig Fulghum with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Two men, two women and a child were thrown from the vessel.

Officials said there were minor burns on most, but a woman was later airlifted to Augusta, Georgia.

An initial investigation showed a lack of ventilation was the cause of the explosion.

Fulghum said it’s important that you have proper ventilation on a boat with an inboard motor, especially after you fuel up.

It’s crucial that turn your blower on five minutes before you fuel up and keep it on five minutes after to allow all the vapors to leave, Fulghum said.

“If you don’t do that, those vapors are just sitting inside that compartment. If you have a loose battery terminal cable or some type of spark inside that engine compartment, it could be a spark plug, you have all the ingredients there for an explosion.”
