A Southern Season sold at auction for $3.5 million

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – A Southern Season in Chapel Hill was sold Friday at auction to new Delaware-based owners.

Calvert Retail bought a Southern Season during an auction Friday afternoon for $3.5 million.

The owners of a Southern Season filed for Chapter 11 June 24. The company was started in 1975.

“I don’t even know what their problems are but I would think people order so much stuff, specialty items online now,” said customer Kay Pratt.

After a hearing in Greensboro, the company was sold to the highest bidder, which was Calvert.

Calvert Retail, a Delaware-based kitchen retailer, hopes to turn things around.

“I wish they could rebound and somehow get themselves out of the hole and come back to life again,” said customer Nadine Hoover.

A representative of Calvert said it does not have any immediate plans to change the Chapel Hill store.

A hearing is scheduled for 4 p.m. to finalize the sale.
