Family dog dies shielding baby girl from fire

BALTIMORE, MD (WCMH) — An 8-month-old baby girl is alive today thanks to an act of heroism from the family’s dog.

Baltimore firefighters tell WBAL that when firefighters arrived, the two-story rowhome had heavy fire and smoke showing and the child was trapped on the second floor.

The girl’s mother, Erika Poremski, said she had quickly stepped out to her car when she turned around to see the home in flames.

“And I couldn’t get to her and I tried really hard. Everybody in the neighborhood tried,” Poremski said. “They were kicking the doors in, kicking the windows out, and it was just, I couldn’t, no one could.”

Poremski had burns on her hands and face from her repeated attempts to get inside the house, WBAL reported.

When firefighters made their way to her daughter, Viviana, they found Poremski’s dog, Polo, in the room, covering her with his body.

“And so that way, nothing got to her, and he just stayed there. She only had burns on this side because of it and he stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door,” Poremski said.

Paramedics were able to revive Viviana, who has severe burns on her face, arm and side. Polo did not survive the fire.

Poremski said Viviana’s condition is still very serious and continues to be monitored day by day.

“She’s doing the best she can right now,” Poremski said. And she’s fighting and that’s it. She’s a really good girl I just hope she’s OK.”
