FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Fayetteville police are investigating a strange attempted robbery that occurred Thursday night at a convenience store.
Officers responded to the Skylite Fast Mart at 6047 Morganton Road just before 10 p.m. in reference to a report of an attempted robbery, police said. The preliminary investigation revealed an odd set of events.
According to police, the victim of the attempted robbery, identified as Thomas Jones, 23, of Fayetteville, parked in front of a business and was then approached by two male suspects. One of the suspects took out a gun and pointed it at Jones. Jones attempted to leave the scene by reversing his vehicle, but his vehicle was still in drive and he slammed into the storefront. After crashing into the store, one of the suspects fired gunshots at Jones in his car. He then took out a gun of his own and returned fire at the suspects, who then fled on foot.
Jones did not sustain any injuries from the gunfire, but he did get charged by Fayetteville police with possession of a stolen firearm. He also had outstanding warrants for his arrest for robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and second-degree kidnapping. He was given a $5,000 secured bond and is currently being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center.
Police released surveillance images of the suspects and are requesting anyone in the area at the time of the attempted robbery and subsequent shooting contact them.
