BOLIVIA, N.C. (WECT) – After David Van Horn lost his RV in a fire, several members of the community reached out to help.
First, a family donated a van so that Van Horn could get to work.
On Thursday, Judy Coates gave him a renovated school bus, a project that her husband worked hard on before he passed away.
“When his MS got bad, he couldn’t work anymore, and so he bought this bus an old school bus and it was empty, and he did all the work inside,” said Coates.
Their plan was to travel the country and Coates’ husband outfitted the old bus to make it livable.
“He made a separate bedroom, with a closet and put in a bathroom with a small shower, a small kitchenette with a stove, table and chairs,” she explained. “He was just non-stop until he got to where he couldn’t go anymore.”
It’s been 9 years since he’s passed away, and the bus was left to rust in the Coates’ yard. When Coates saw David Van Horn had lost his future home in a fire, she knew exactly what her husband would have wanted.
“He would say give it to him, because we have a home,” she said.
Van Horn is now the new owner of the old school bus, just days after he lost his camper. He was overwhelmed and so grateful to Coates for her generosity.
“I’m still kind of in shock,” Van Horn said. “I’m pretty much out of words.”
It will take some work to get it running again, but it’s the kind of work Van Horn loves to do. He’s looking forward to fixing up the bus, and left with a promise to the former owner.
“I know this probably means a lot to you being your husband’s project,” Van Horn stated. “When she’s all prettied up I’ll bring her back to see you.”
